Kitesurf spot Cayeux-sur-Mer

All the information you need to kite there safely

It is, without exaggeration, one of the most beautiful kitesurfing spots in the North of France (yes it is, I promise). And it only takes 2h30 from Paris to get there.

Don't be fooled by its original name and 320 beach huts. This seaside resort located in the south of the baie de Somme in the Hauts-de-France region is a great spot for kitesurfing.

The natural setting is sublime! You can encounter seals and lots of different species of birds... quite nice, isn't it? 😉
And even better, no obstacles like swimmers with armbands. The spot is large, you have plenty of space on this huge pebble beach!
At low tide, the pebbles give way to sand!

Whatever your level, this beach is as adapted for learning as it is for the more experienced. In fact, many locals have made it their favourite pastime! But don't worry, there's enough room to not get tangled up with your neighbour's lines.

Winds and tides

The wind

The winds from South-West to North-West through West are perfect for kiting.

For the most informed, the East / North-East winds are less irregular than on the beach at Le Crotoy, which can make Cayeux-Sur-Mer a good fallback spot in this case.

Be careful though, the North winds can be very unstable!
You will find below a detailed explanatory diagram 😉

The tides

As the tides change, the kiting playground also changes entirely and perfectly suits both novice and expert riders. This makes the spot super interesting!

Rising/high tide:
When the tide is high, it is possible to ride some pretty waves, try out some jumps and practice your new tricks... 😍

ebb tide/low tide:
As the tide goes out, the waves smooth out and give way to sandbanks in the bay for about 1.5 hours, which is particularly good for learning to kitesurf. It is pretty shallow, but there is enough water to cushion the falls.
During that period, there are no obstacles, neither waves nor shore breaks. And, icing on the cake, when the wind is from South West / West, it is opposite the current. Isn't that fabulous?

Safety:
However, you should remain cautious with the currents, it would be silly to lose your board!

In summary :

Cayeux-sur-mer is perfectly suited for learning the sport. The natural setting is magnificent, and all the elements point to a moment of pure happiness!
Be careful though, at high tide it's a pebble beach, so it can be a bit more complicated for beginners!

We would like to thank the Baie de Somme Kitesurfing School for their advice which will allow you to enjoy these kite moments safely on the beach of Cayeux-sur-Mer.
