Kitesurf spot ''Deauville''
All the information you need to kite there safely
And no, the seaside resort of Deauville is not only about colourful umbrellas and big hotels by the sea. You can also take your kitesurfing equipment and ride there. It's a real kiteboarder's paradise, no matter what your level.
This town is located in the department of Calvados, in Normandy. Its large sandy beach is located between the sea and the Boulevard Cornuché. The journey time is estimated at about 2h10 by car from Paris.
Outside the summer period, this area is not very busy. However, when the temperature rises, the number of tourists explodes.
In the summer, you have to be careful with the cohabitation with the swimmers, the bathing area is very large, measuring 550 meters long and 300 meters wide. It is forbidden to fly your kite in these waters.
However, you can head further south to kite around Blonville.
Winds and tides
The wind
Side Onshore
As far as the wind is concerned, you will look for West, South-West to North-East orientations. The ideal orientation is "side onshore". This will give you the opportunity to move away from the beach in complete safety.
Onshore
By onshore wind, at high tide, nice waves can be formed: quite cool if you want to do some strapless 😉 Beware however for the more novice riders among you, high tide + waves + onshore wind = difficult start because the waves break in the back and bring you back to the beach. It is therefore sometimes a bit complicated to move away towards the open sea as it requires you to know how to jump over the waves while going upwind!
Offshore
Offshore wind is not recommended as you risk being pushed out to sea.
If the wind is slightly off, or even side-off, it is blocked by the relief of the coast and will be weaker than what is announced in the forecast. Don't forget to take this into account when choosing your kite 😉
You will find below a detailed explanatory diagram:
The tides
The big advantage of this spot is that the beach is huge, so even at high tide you will still have a large area of sand that will allow you to take off or land your kite without any trouble 🤙
The spot is suitable for foils, which will allow you to ride even if it’s not blowing too much.
If you prefer flat water, it’s also the right place! This kitesurfing spot allows you to learn gently if you are a beginner and is also a pleasure for freestyle amateurs.
Access
To access the navigable area, you can park at the end of Rue Chauvelot.
If this spot is taken, we advise you to turn left to go up the Boulevard de la Mer. Be careful though, this is the swimming area in summer!
On that note, now that you have all the info, The Ridery team wishes you a great time on the famous beach of Deauville!

In summary :
So Deauville is not only a beautiful sandy beach to sunbathe on in summer! Yes, it's also a great kite spot if you know when to come!
The ideal wind direction is West/South West to North East.
For the tides, they all work, so no problem there. At high tide with onshore wind though, nice waves can form, so it's the right plan if you ever want to dabble with your strapless skills 😉
If in winter and in between seasons this spot will be rather quiet, keep in mind that in summer it is quite crowded, and that the supervised swimming area is forbidden to kite in. You will have to move away a little if you want to enjoy the wind!
On that note, good kiting!
