All the information you need to kite there safely
A pressing desire for freedom? Taking your board out, gliding on the water pulled by the force of the wind... To you, kiteboarder friend who dreams of a coastal escapade, here is a kitesurfing spot located only 2h15 from the Capital.
Its name? Houlgate! Located in the Calvados region (Pays d'Auge), thirty minutes from Caen, this magnificent seaside resort is called "The Gem of the Côte Fleurie".
Its large sandy beach and its basins are more or less famous and, as the place is family friendly, it can be very busy during the weekends. But don't stress, the beach is huge! If you walk a bit, you won't have any trouble finding your own spot 😉
Useful information before you start ? It's just below !
Winds and tides
The wind
The best orientations range from West to North-East.
However, beware of La Falaise des Vaches Noires which disrupts East/North-East winds. The wind is often stronger than what is announced on beacon or anemometer forecasts! You should expect an additional 5 to 10 knots.
You will find below a detailed explanatory diagram 😉
The tides
Regarding the tides, it's an awesome spot! Low and high tides all work!
Moreover, at mid-tide, baïnes (large and shallow pools of water) are formed. But don't worry, they are not dangerous at all!
They form over a period of one to two hours, which allows you to ride on ultra-flat and shallow water ! And, if the tidal coefficient is small (i.e. around 30), these baïnes remain full all day and then... it's on fire!
At high tide, you can go for long runs in the direction of Cabourg and Deauville. And if your thing is jumping, you will have a good time on the waves which offer plenty of ramps.
Access
To park, there is a car park right next to the Houlgate Kite Association (le Parking du Temple), which brings kiteboarders together 🤙
In addition, there are several areas set up especially for kiteboarders! The first one is after the first aid post, if you go towards Dive-Sur-Mer.
If you are heading towards the cliffs, the second area is after the Casino and the lifeguard station.
Here is an example of where you can park :

In summary :
The Spot le Houlgate, it's kind of "the place to be" (according to our repairman Bruno anyway, for whom it's his home spot 😉 )! Whether you're a beginner or an expert, it offers many possibilities to suit your style, whether at high or low tide.
We prefer the wind from West up to North East to ride.
We would like to thank Bruno from Kiterepair for all this information about the Houlgate spot!
And last but not least : what are you still doing behind your screen? Now that you have all the info, go kite!😉
